Whats-in-a-name

longisland

Firstly the name as it’s pronounced PEL*AGO, is derived from the last half of the word Archipelago which is defined as (a group of many islands in a large body of water).

The Bahamas where we’re located happens to be a Nation of such. The Wikipedia describes the Bahamas is an archipelago of some 700 islands and cays covering over 100,000 mi² (260,000 km²) of the Atlantic Ocean between Florida and Hispaniola.

However, it is said, that 17 main islands is inhabited on a full time basis, which leave the remaining 683 waiting to be explored! Will you be the one?

One of those Islands nestled within our archipelago is Long Island, Bahamas where most of these natural sea sponges are harvested from pristine waters just a few yards off shore. There are other islands in our archipelago where sponges could be harvested but this website is dedicated to these natural sea beauties found in the waters of Long Island, Bahamas.

As regards our experience in the sponging industry; we are licensed exporters and have partnered with the sponge fishermen and harvesters of Long Island with a combine total of 30 years in sponge harvesting industry and international export.

The export side of the business got started back in the early 1990’s when a friend ask Tony Claridge (founder of Pélago Sea Sponges) to export these lovelies to him in Canada and since then we now have clients in the U.S., Canada, Italy, Greece, Lebanon, Japan and now you!
